In the finite element method we use basis functions with local support
- Local support: \( \baspsi_i(x) \neq 0 \) for \( x \) in a
small subdomain of \( \Omega \)
- Typically hat-shaped
- \( u(x) \) based on these \( \baspsi_i \) is a piecewise polynomial
defined over many (small) subdomains
- We introduce \( \basphi_i \) as the name of these finite element hat
functions (and for now choose \( \baspsi_i=\basphi_i \))
